Quick answer
Montego Bay, on Jamaica's northwest coast, is where most visitors to the island arrive, through Sangster International Airport on the edge of town. The Hip Strip along Gloucester Avenue has Doctor's Cave Beach, bars and jerk stands; the historic downtown centres on Sam Sharpe Square; and east of the airport, Ironshore and Rose Hall hold the big all-inclusive resorts, golf courses and 18th-century great houses. Rafting on the Martha Brae, the glowing Luminous Lagoon near Falmouth and day trips to Negril and Dunn's River Falls are all within reach. Plan 7 days for a first visit; the best months are December–April.

Getting there and around
Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is about 5 km from the Hip Strip and 15–25 minutes from Ironshore and Rose Hall resorts. Most visitors use pre-booked resort transfers or JUTA taxis from the arrivals area. Negril is about 1.5 hours away and Ocho Rios about 1.5–2 hours.
The Hip Strip is walkable, but Montego Bay is otherwise spread along the coast and most visitors use taxis, resort transfers and tours. Licensed taxis carry red PP number plates; route taxis and buses serve locals but are crowded.
Plan your days
Four days covers beach time, the Hip Strip, a great house and one excursion such as Martha Brae rafting. A week leaves room for Negril, Dunn's River Falls or the south coast's YS Falls and Black River.
