Money-saving tips
- The composite monument ticket costs less than buying separate entries if you visit three or more state-run sites.
- Use Uber or Ola rather than bargaining with auto drivers, especially for longer trips to Amber or the airport.
- Avoid shops your driver or a friendly stranger recommends; commission-driven emporiums mark prices up sharply.
- Never buy gems to 'resell at home for profit' — the gem export scam is long-running in Jaipur.
- Visit April or July–September for the lowest hotel rates, including palace hotels.
- Carry small notes for chai, snacks and tips; many stalls cannot change large notes.
Free things to do
- Jal Mahal — This five-storey palace appears to float in Man Sagar Lake on the road between the city and Amber; when the lake is full, the lower floors are under water.
- Panna Meena ka Kund — A 16th-century stepwell a short walk behind Amber Fort, where criss-crossing flights of steps descend symmetrically on three sides to the water.
- Galtaji (Monkey Temple) — About 10 km east of the centre, a pink-sandstone complex of temples and pavilions is built into a narrow gorge, where natural springs fill a series of sacred tanks used for bathing.
- Birla Mandir — This white-marble Hindu temple, dedicated to Lakshmi and Narayan and completed in 1988, sits below the small Moti Dungri hill.
- Govind Dev Ji Temple — Jaipur's most beloved Krishna temple stands in the City Palace gardens, where the deity was brought from Vrindavan by the founding Maharaja.
- Johari, Bapu and Tripolia bazaars — The old city's covered arcades are still organised by trade.
