Quick answer

Jaipur is one of India's great craft cities: gems and silver jewellery, block-printed cottons from Sanganer and Bagru, blue pottery, lac bangles and light cotton quilts. Shop in the old-city bazaars for atmosphere and at fixed-price stores in C-Scheme for quality without bargaining. Best souvenirs: Block-printed textiles, Blue pottery and Lac bangles.

Food and drink to take home

Edible souvenirs travel best when they are dry or sealed: consider Pyaaz kachori, Ghewar, Lassi and Masala chai. Rawat Mishthan Bhandar near Sindhi Camp is the most famous; sweet shops across the old city fry them each morning. Check your home country's rules on bringing food and drink back.

Paying and bargaining

Prices are in INR. Tipping is customary but modest. Leave about 5–10% in restaurants if no service charge is added, give a small tip to hotel porters, and tip a hired driver or guide at the end of the day according to the service.

  • Bargaining is normal in bazaars and with auto-rickshaws, but keep it good-humoured.
  • Use Uber or Ola rather than bargaining with auto drivers, especially for longer trips to Amber or the airport.
  • Avoid shops your driver or a friendly stranger recommends; commission-driven emporiums mark prices up sharply.

When to shop

Shops and markets are quietest in May–June; the busiest months are November–January.

  • January: Jaipur Literature Festival (usually late January)
  • February: Holi — festival of colours (late February or March, by the lunar calendar)
  • March: Gangaur — women's festival with processions from the City Palace (March or April)
  • July: Teej — monsoon festival with a royal procession through the old city (July or August)
  • October: Diwali — the bazaars are illuminated (October or November)
  • November: Pushkar Camel Fair (usually late October or November)
