Quick answer

Interlaken's nightlife is small but sociable, driven by backpacker hostels, pubs along the Höheweg and après-ski in winter. Mountain villages are quiet at night, apart from ski-season bars in Grindelwald and Wengen. The main areas are Höheweg and Jungfraustrasse and Grindelwald.

Nightlife tips

  • Hostels around Interlaken often have their own bars, the easiest way to meet other travellers.
  • Plan big nights before rest days; early mountain starts are part of the appeal of the region.
  • The last trains up to the mountain villages leave in the late evening, so check times before staying out.

What to drink

  • Local beer — Interlaken's own brewery in Matten produces lagers and seasonal beers that are poured across the region.

Getting home late

  • Walking — Walking covers the town, Unterseen and both lake piers; flat paths also run along the Aare and the lake shores.
  • Ferry — BLS boats cross Lake Brienz from Interlaken Ost and Lake Thun from Interlaken West, serving lakeside villages, castles and caves.
  • Bus — Overnight guests usually receive a guest card with free local bus travel in the Interlaken area.

Late-night bites

  • Bernese Alpine cheese — Dairies and alp huts along hiking trails, village cheese shops and supermarkets.

Staying safe at night

Interlaken is generally low-risk for visitors, with the main dangers coming from the mountains: sudden weather changes, altitude on high peaks and slippery trails. Use licensed operators for adventure sports and follow trail signs and weather warnings.
