Nightlife tips
- Night buses run on peak winter evenings between the centre and the villages; check times before heading out.
- Après-ski starts early and many people are on the first lift the next morning, so weeknights wind down by midnight.
- Bars are at their liveliest in February, around New Year and during the UTMB week.
What to drink
- Génépi — A herbal liqueur made from artemisia plants that grow at high altitude, traditionally drunk as a digestif after a heavy cheese meal.
- Vin chaud — Mulled red wine with orange and spices, served steaming in mugs at après-ski bars and on the slopes.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 10°C (50°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 17:13 | -7°C (19°F) | 10 |
| April | About 20:19 | 0°C (32°F) | 11 |
| July | About 21:20 | 10°C (50°F) | 11 |

Getting home late
- Walking — The centre, the Aiguille du Midi base and the Montenvers station are all within 10 minutes of each other on foot, and a flat riverside path runs up the valley towards Les Praz.
- Bus — Ask your accommodation for the guest card, which gives free travel on valley buses and trains within the valley.
Staying safe at night
The main risks are mountain ones: rapid weather changes, altitude, cold at the high viewpoints and avalanche danger off-piste. Never go onto glaciers or off-piste without a qualified guide and proper equipment, and check weather and avalanche bulletins before setting out.
- Emergency number
- 112 (European emergency number; mountain rescue is coordinated through it)
