Ha Long Bay neighbourhoods in detail
$$ · Best for first-timers, families and nightlife
Bai Chay
Bai Chay is the tourist side of Ha Long city, west of the Bai Chay Bridge, with high-rise hotels along the seafront, a man-made beach, the night market and the Sun World complex with its cable car and Sun Wheel. Most day and overnight cruises leave from the international cruise port here or from Tuan Chau a short drive away.
- Good
- Close to cruise departures; Wide choice of hotels at every price; Seafood restaurants and evening activity
- Watch out
- Built-up, with large new developments; Beach is artificial and crowded in summer
- Nearby
- Sun World Ha Long, Ha Long International Cruise Port, Bai Chay Bridge
$ · Best for budget, food lovers and culture
Hon Gai
East of the bridge, Hon Gai is Ha Long's administrative and commercial centre, built around coal-mining and fishing, with Ha Long market, local noodle shops and the black-glass Quang Ninh Museum. Bai Tho Mountain rises above the town and gives views over the bay and the port. It feels more Vietnamese and less touristy than Bai Chay.
- Good
- Local food at local prices; Everyday Vietnamese town life; Lower hotel prices
- Watch out
- Few tourist services; A taxi ride to the cruise ports
- Nearby
- Bai Tho Mountain, Quang Ninh Museum, Ha Long market
$$$ · Best for families, quiet stays and luxury
Tuan Chau Island
Tuan Chau, about 10 km west of Bai Chay, is a developed resort island with a marina that many cruise boats use, a beach, resort hotels and the car ferry to Cat Ba. Staying here makes sense for an early departure or a cruise that starts from the marina, but there is little life beyond the resorts.
- Good
- Walk to cruise check-in; Resort pools and beach; Ferry to Cat Ba Island
- Watch out
- Isolated from Ha Long town; Resort-dependent dining
- Nearby
- Tuan Chau Marina, Tuan Chau beach, Cat Ba ferry
$ · Best for budget, solo travellers, beach and nightlife
Cat Ba Town
Cat Ba Town wraps around a harbour on the south of Cat Ba Island, with a seafront strip of guesthouses, seafood restaurants and travel agencies selling kayaking and boat trips into Lan Ha Bay. The Cat Co beaches are a 10-minute walk over the headland, and the national park is about 15 km inland. It is the main base for independent travellers.
- Good
- Good-value guesthouses; Easy access to Lan Ha Bay and hiking; Backpacker bars and a social scene
- Watch out
- Concrete hotel blocks along the harbour; Very crowded on summer weekends
- Nearby
- Cat Co beaches, Cannon Fort, Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba National Park
$$$ · Best for couples, quiet stays and beach
Lan Ha Bay
Lan Ha Bay lies within the Cat Ba archipelago and has the same limestone scenery as Ha Long Bay with far fewer boats, plus small sandy coves only reachable by water. A few boutique resorts and bungalows on secluded beaches or islands are accessed by boat from Cat Ba, and many overnight cruises now route through it.
- Good
- Fewer boats than Ha Long Bay; Secluded beaches and kayaking; Feels remote
- Watch out
- Boat-only access to some lodgings; Limited dining outside your resort
- Nearby
- Cat Ba Town, Monkey Island, Viet Hai
$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples and luxury
Overnight cruise
For many visitors the cruise is the accommodation: cabins with private bathrooms on wooden junk-style or steel boats that anchor among the islands overnight. Itineraries include kayaking, a cave, a viewpoint, cooking demonstrations and tai chi at dawn. Standards range from basic boats to luxury ships with balconies and spas.
- Good
- Sunset and sunrise among the islands; All activities and meals included; No hotel transfers each day
- Watch out
- Fixed itineraries and set meal times; Can be cancelled by the port authority in bad weather
- Nearby
- Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island, Luon Cave, Bai Tu Long Bay
$$ · Best for quiet stays, beach and couples
Van Don and Bai Tu Long Bay
Van Don is a district of islands beside Bai Tu Long Bay, which continues Ha Long's karst scenery to the north-east with fewer visitors. It is home to Van Don International Airport and the piers for ferries to Quan Lan and Co To islands, whose long beaches and fishing villages remain low-key.
- Good
- Close to Van Don airport; Quieter islands and beaches; Fresh seafood from local farms
- Watch out
- Fewer hotels and restaurants; Ferry schedules depend on weather
- Nearby
- Van Don International Airport, Quan Lan Island, Co To Island
