Solo travel tips

  • Cat Ba Town is the best base for meeting other travellers and joining shared Lan Ha Bay boat trips.
  • Some budget cruises offer shared cabins or no single supplement; ask before booking.
  • Book cruises through established operators or your Hanoi hotel rather than street touts.
  • Keep your phone in a dry bag on kayaking trips.

Where to stay

Cat Ba Town

Cat Ba Town wraps around a harbour on the south of Cat Ba Island, with a seafront strip of guesthouses, seafood restaurants and travel agencies selling kayaking and boat trips into Lan Ha Bay. The Cat Co beaches are a 10-minute walk over the headland, and the national park is about 15 km inland. It is the main base for independent travellers.

Good

Overnight bay cruise

Ask which route the boat takes and how many hours are spent cruising rather than at stops; quieter routes through Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha are worth a slightly longer transfer.

Meeting people

  • Pick-your-own seafood dinner — At seafood restaurants in Bai Chay and Cat Ba you choose live crabs, mantis shrimp, clams and fish from tanks, agree the price by weight and decide how each is cooked.
  • Cooking class on a cruise — Many overnight cruises include a deck demonstration of fresh spring rolls or squid cakes, followed by a seafood dinner while the boat lies at anchor.

Sensible precautions

Sailings can be suspended at short notice during storms; follow crew instructions, wear a life jacket when kayaking and on small boats, and avoid unlicensed operators. On Cat Ba, monkeys at Monkey Island can bite and snatch belongings.

Staying connected
Mobile coverage is good in Ha Long city and on Cat Ba but patchy among the islands; Wi-Fi on cruise boats is often slow.
