Quick answer

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO-listed seascape of roughly 1,600 limestone islands and islets in Quang Ninh province, about 160 km east of Hanoi. Most visitors see it from a boat: day cruises and overnight junks leave Bai Chay and Tuan Chau for caves, kayaking lagoons and island viewpoints, while Cat Ba Island and the neighbouring Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long bays offer the same scenery with fewer boats. Ha Long city itself is a resort town split by a bridge between Bai Chay and Hon Gai. Plan 3 days for a first visit; the best months are April–May and October–November.

Why visit Ha Long Bay

  • Several thousand forested limestone towers rise straight out of green water, a landscape listed by UNESCO for its scenery and geology.
  • An overnight cruise lets you wake among the islands, kayak into enclosed lagoons and visit caves such as Sung Sot and Thien Cung.
  • Cat Ba Island adds a national park with forest hikes, beaches and access to the quieter Lan Ha Bay.
  • Fresh seafood is the local cuisine: Ha Long squid cakes, mantis shrimp, clams and oysters from Bai Tu Long Bay.
  • The bay is reachable from Hanoi in about 2.5–3 hours on the expressway, so it fits even a short Vietnam itinerary.

When to go

The best months for Ha Long Bay are March to May and October to November, when skies are clearer, seas are calm and temperatures are comfortable for kayaking and hiking. Summer is hot and busy with a risk of typhoons that can cancel cruises, while winter is cool and often misty.

Getting there and around

Most visitors fly into Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport (HAN), about 170 km away, and transfer by car, van or shuttle in about 2.5–3 hours. Van Don International Airport (VDO), about 50 km from Bai Chay, has a smaller number of domestic and some international flights and is under an hour by road.

The bay itself is seen by boat, either on an organised cruise or on day boats from Bai Chay, Tuan Chau or Cat Ba. On land, Ha Long city is spread out along the coast, so taxis and ride-hailing are the practical way between Bai Chay, Hon Gai and Tuan Chau.
