Day by day

  1. Day 1: Liseberg and Universeum

Liseberg, Universeum and Götaplatsen and the Poseidon statue, then Avenyn in the evening. A walking day (longest hop 0.6 km, straight line).

    1. Morning

      Liseberg

It opens seasonally, and in late autumn and early winter it becomes a Christmas market lit by millions of lights.

    2. Late morning

      Universeum

It is the city's main rainy-day option for families.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Shrimp sandwich

Feskekôrka, Stora Saluhallen and seafood restaurants along the harbour and in the archipelago.

    4. Afternoon

      Götaplatsen and the Poseidon statue

In the middle stands Carl Milles' bronze Poseidon fountain from 1931, and the steps of the art museum give a long view straight down the boulevard.

    5. Café break

      Café break: Cinnamon bun

    6. Evening

      Avenyn

The main boulevard and its side streets hold the largest nightclubs and terrace bars, busiest on Friday and Saturday nights.

  2. Day 2: Haga and Haga Nygata and Skansen Kronan

Haga and Haga Nygata, Skansen Kronan, Feskekôrka and Röhsska Museum, then Linnégatan and Järntorget in the evening. A walking day (longest hop 0.9 km, straight line).

    1. Morning

      Haga and Haga Nygata

It is the classic place for fika, and Café Husaren is known for the Hagabullen, a cinnamon bun roughly the size of a dinner plate.

    2. Late morning

      Skansen Kronan

The grassy hilltop around it is a free viewpoint across Haga, the city centre and the harbour cranes.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Halv special

Gatukök (street kiosks) and hot-dog stands around the city, especially late at night.

    4. Afternoon

      Feskekôrka

Fishmongers inside sell west coast shrimp, langoustines, smoked fish and ready-made shrimp sandwiches, and there are counters where you can eat seafood on the spot.

    5. Café break

      Café break: Semla

    6. Late afternoon

      Röhsska Museum

Exhibitions trace Scandinavian design from historic crafts to contemporary products.

    7. Evening

      Linnégatan and Järntorget

Wine bars, pubs and restaurants that stay lively late, with a slightly older local crowd.

Before you go

  • Liseberg: Prices and opening days vary by season; check the park's calendar and buy tickets online before Christmas-market weekends and summer holidays.

Västtrafik period tickets

24-hour and 72-hour tickets in the Västtrafik To Go app cover trams, buses, the river ferry and archipelago ferries within Gothenburg.

If it rains

  • Swap in Gothenburg Natural History Museum (Slottsskogen): Pair it with the free animal enclosures in Slottsskogen for an easy family day out on a showery afternoon.
  • Swap in Trädgårdsföreningen and the Palm House (Inom Vallgraven): Use it as a green short cut between Central Station and Avenyn, and come in July when the rosarium is in full bloom.
  • Swap in Gothenburg City Museum (Inom Vallgraven): Go straight to the Viking galleries for the Äskekärr ship, then look at the East India Company's porcelain trade rooms.

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 10–14 hours of visiting over 2 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 6.6 hours in December to 18 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Tram. Trams run frequently through the centre and out to Slottsskogen, Liseberg, Saltholmen and Hisingen, and are usually the fastest way across town.
