Getting to the beaches

  • Scooter — Renting a scooter is the most popular way to explore between beaches; you need a valid driving licence and a helmet.
  • Bus — Kadamba state buses and private buses connect towns and beach villages cheaply from hubs at Panaji, Mapusa and Margao, but routes can be slow and crowded.
  • Ferry — Free or very cheap government ferries carry passengers and vehicles across rivers, including from Old Goa to Divar and Ribandar to Chorão.
  • Train — Konkan Railway stations at Thivim (north), Karmali (Old Goa), Madgaon (south) and Canacona (near Palolem) link Goa with Mumbai, Kerala and Karnataka.

Beach-weather months

Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in October–May. The busiest of those is December, so book early.

Beach safety

Rip currents make swimming dangerous on many beaches, especially from June to September when swimming is often banned; obey lifeguards and red flags. Scooter accidents are a common cause of injury, so wear a helmet and avoid riding at night or after drinking. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
