Methodology

  • Cities: Natural Earth v5.1.2 populated places with a population estimate (POP_MAX) of 1,000,000 or more.
  • Airports: airports with scheduled passenger service and an IATA code, classified large or medium in OurAirports (retrieved 2026-10-18).
  • Distance: great-circle (haversine) from Natural Earth’s point for the city — roughly its centre — to each airport’s reference point.
  • Ties are ordered by population, then name.

Limitations

  • A single point stands for a whole city; for sprawling metro areas the count depends on where that point is.
  • Population estimates are used only to select cities; they are not shown or ranked.
