Lido
The Lido is a narrow barrier island about 15 minutes by vaporetto from San Marco, with an Adriatic beach running most of its length, early-20th-century villas and hotels, and the Palazzo del Cinema where the Venice Film Festival is held. Cars and buses run here, and cycling is the best way to explore.

Getting to the beaches
- Boat — Vaporetti (water buses) serve the Grand Canal (lines 1 and 2), the outer city, Giudecca, the Lido, Murano and Burano.
- Ferry — Traghetti are gondolas that ferry passengers across the Grand Canal at a few points between bridges for a small fare.
- Bus — Buses link Piazzale Roma with the airport, Mestre and the mainland; the People Mover monorail runs between Piazzale Roma, the cruise terminal and Tronchetto car park.
- Train — Trains cross the lagoon bridge from Venezia Mestre to Venezia Santa Lucia station on the Grand Canal in about 10 minutes, and continue to Padua, Verona and beyond.
Beach-weather months
Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in June–September. The busiest of those is June, so book early.
Beach safety
Venice has little serious crime, but pickpockets work on crowded vaporetti and around the Rialto and St Mark's. Stone steps and fondamente are slippery when wet, and during acqua alta raised walkways appear on main routes; check tide forecasts in autumn and winter. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
