Money-saving tips

  • Stay in town or Aldea Zamá and cycle to the beach to cut accommodation and taxi costs.
  • Eat at the taquerías and loncherías of Tulum Centro rather than on the beach road.
  • Pay in pesos; prices quoted in dollars usually include a poor exchange rate.
  • Public beaches such as Playa Paraíso are free; beach clubs charge entry or minimum spends.
  • Visit in November or May for lower prices than the December–April peak.

Free things to do

  • Playa Paraíso — Just south of the ruins, this long stretch of fine white sand and shallow turquoise water is the classic Tulum beach, with palm trees, a few beach clubs and views north to El Castillo.
  • Beach road and Zona Hotelera — The single-lane coastal road south of the junction is lined with thatched boutique hotels, design shops, juice bars and restaurants set among palms and jungle, with beach access between properties.
  • Tulum Pueblo and Avenida Tulum — The town's main avenue and the streets behind it are where locals and budget travellers eat: taco al pastor stands, Yucatecan cochinita pibil in the mornings, marquesita carts in the evening and the central park where families gather.

Eating well for less

  • Cochinita pibil — Morning stands and small restaurants in Tulum Centro; many sell out before noon.
  • Tacos al pastor — Taquerías along Avenida Tulum in town, busiest in the evening.
  • Panuchos and salbutes — Loncherías and evening stands in Tulum Centro.

Getting around for less

Tulum is spread out: the town sits on the highway, the beach road runs about 4–5 km away, and cenotes are scattered along the roads to Cobá and Playa del Carmen. Bikes suit the town-to-beach run, while taxis, colectivos and a rental car handle longer distances.
