Day by day

  1. Day 1: Narikala Fortress and Bridge of Peace and Rike Park

Narikala Fortress, Bridge of Peace and Rike Park, Anchiskhati Basilica and Sioni Cathedral, then Abanotubani sulphur baths in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Narikala Fortress

From its towers there are views over the sulphur-bath domes, the river and the city. A cable car glides up from Rike Park across the river in a few minutes.

    2. Late morning

Bridge of Peace and Rike Park

After dark its canopy lights up with LEDs. Rike Park has fountains, play areas and the lower station of the Narikala cable car.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Adjarian khachapuri

Khachapuri specialists and traditional restaurants across the city.

    4. Afternoon

      Anchiskhati Basilica

Its choir is known for traditional Georgian polyphonic singing during services.

    5. Late afternoon

      Sioni Cathedral

Sioni Cathedral, rebuilt several times since the 6th century, is traditionally believed to hold the cross of St Nino, made of grapevines bound with her hair, who brought Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century.

    6. Evening

      Abanotubani sulphur baths

Book a private room in the evening; a scrub with a kisi mitt is worth adding, and you'll leave very relaxed.

  2. Day 2: Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia) and Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba)

Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia), Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba), Metekhi Church and Georgian National Museum, then Mtatsminda Park and funicular in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia)

It stands a short walk from the Narikala cable car's upper station.

    2. Late morning

      Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba)

Its grounds include gardens, smaller chapels and a bell tower.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Khinkali

Khinkali houses (sakhinkle) all over the city; order by the piece, usually 5 or 10.

    4. Afternoon

      Metekhi Church

It is one of the classic views of the city.

    5. Late afternoon

      Georgian National Museum

Other floors cover natural history and the Soviet occupation.

    6. Evening

      Mtatsminda Park and funicular

Go up an hour before sunset to see the city by day and as the lights come on.

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 9–12 hours of visiting over 2 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.2 hours in December to 15.2 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Metro. Two metro lines cross the city, with stations at Freedom Square, Rustaveli, Avlabari and Marjanishvili.
