Day by day
Day 1: Temple Square and Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square
Temple Square, Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, FamilySearch Library and Cathedral of the Madeleine, then Downtown in the evening.
Morning
Temple Square
Ask a volunteer guide for a short tour, and step inside the Tabernacle to hear a pin drop demonstrate its acoustics. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Late morning
Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square
Arrive early for the Sunday broadcast; doors close before it begins and do not reopen until it ends. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
Lunch
Lunch: Fry sauce
Local burger drive-ins across the valley; ask for it if it does not arrive automatically.
Afternoon
FamilySearch Library
Create a free FamilySearch account and enter what you know about your grandparents before you go to save time. Allow 1–3 hours.
Late afternoon
Cathedral of the Madeleine
Visit on a sunny afternoon for the windows, and check the cathedral's choir schedule for free concerts. Allow 30 minutes.
Evening
Downtown
Cocktail bars, music venues and theatres around Main Street, Pierpont Avenue and the Eccles Theater.
If it rains
- Swap in Utah State Capitol (Capitol Hill and Marmalade): Walk up through Memory Grove Park and City Creek, then continue to Ensign Peak for the best view.
- Swap in Natural History Museum of Utah (University and East Bench): Combine it with Red Butte Garden next door; both have hillside views.
- Swap in Beehive House (Downtown): It is one block east of Temple Square on South Temple; combine it with the Eagle Gate arch across the street.
Where to stay for this itinerary
$$$ · Best for first-timers, families, shopping and nightlife
Downtown
Temple Square, convention hotels and City Creek Center on a wide-street grid
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 4–7 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.3 hours in December to 15.1 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
Getting between stops: Tram. UTA's TRAX light rail has three lines: the Green Line to the airport, the Red Line to the University of Utah and the Blue Line south through the valley.
