Quick answer

Rio's romance lies in its settings: sunsets over the sea, cable cars at dusk and candlelit tables in Santa Teresa's old houses. Plan around the light — late afternoon at Arpoador or on Sugarloaf shows the city at its best. Couples tend to stay in Ipanema.

Where couples should stay

$$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, food lovers, shopping and beach

Ipanema

Ipanema pairs a famous beach divided by numbered lifeguard posts with leafy streets of boutiques, juice bars and restaurants on Rua Visconde de Pirajá and Rua Garcia d'Ávila. It is more polished than Copacabana, sits between Arpoador and Leblon, and has a Metrô station at General Osório, the square that hosts the Sunday Hippie Fair.

Good
Excellent beach and sunset views; Walkable streets with good restaurants; Metrô access
Watch out
Expensive hotels; Very crowded beach on summer weekends
Nearby
Arpoador, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Praça General Osório, Leblon

Romantic day trips

  • Niterói and the MAC (About 20 minutes by ferry, then a short ride) — Oscar Niemeyer's flying-saucer Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) perches on a cliff with views back across Guanabara Bay to Sugarloaf and Corcovado.
  • Búzios (About 2.5–3 hours by bus or transfer) — A former fishing village on a peninsula with more than 20 beaches, Búzios is known for the restaurants and boutiques of Rua das Pedras and the calm bays of Ferradura and João Fernandes.
  • Ilha Grande (About 3 hours by road and boat) — A car-free island of Atlantic rainforest and beaches, with the village of Abraão as its hub and Lopes Mendes beach a hike or boat ride away.
  • Paraty (About 4–5 hours by bus) — A colonial port of white churches and uneven stone streets, some of which flood at the highest tides, Paraty has boat trips to islands and beaches in its bay.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Feijoada and Picanha and churrasco. Tap water is rarely served; order mineral water still (sem gás) or sparkling (com gás).
