Getting to the beaches

  • Bus — Rapid Penang buses run from the Weld Quay and Komtar terminals to Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang, Air Itam, the airport and the mainland, and free CAT shuttle buses have looped the heritage zone.
  • Ferry — Passenger ferries cross the channel between George Town and Butterworth, where trains leave for Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, in about 10–20 minutes.

Beach-weather months

Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in January–February. None of them is peak season, so beaches stay manageable.

Beach safety

Penang is generally calm for visitors. Watch for bag snatching by passing motorcyclists and traffic on narrow streets, take the heat seriously, and avoid swimming where currents or jellyfish are reported. Haze from regional fires occasionally affects air quality. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
