Money-saving tips
- Use ride-hailing apps rather than hotel taxis for trips around the city.
- Group the Sheldrick orphanage, Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum into one half-day with a single hired driver.
- Park fees are charged in US dollars for non-residents and gates are cashless; budget for them separately from daily spending.
- Lodges and camps cut rates in the long rains (April–May) and the short rains (November), excluding holiday weeks.
- Eat lunch at local canteens, where ugali, stew and greens cost a fraction of hotel menus.
- Carry some cash in small notes for markets and tips, as card machines are not universal.
Free things to do
- Kazuri Beads workshop — Founded in 1975, this Karen workshop employs local women, many of them single mothers, to hand-make and paint ceramic beads and pottery.
- City Market — A 1930s covered market off Muindi Mbingu Street, with fruit, vegetable and flower stalls in the main hall and curio dealers selling carvings, soapstone and baskets around the edges.
- Maasai Market — An open-air craft market that moves to a different site on different days of the week, including mall car parks such as Village Market in Gigiri.

Eating well for less
- Chapati — Canteens, roadside stalls and breakfast menus all over the city.
- Mandazi — Bakeries, kiosks and canteens, usually piled in glass cases next to the tea urn.
- Mutura — Evening street grills near markets and bus stages, and some nyama choma joints.
- Smokie pasua — Hand carts on CBD streets, near universities and at matatu stages.
Getting around for less
Nairobi is spread out and traffic is heavy, so most visitors move by ride-hailing apps or with a hired driver rather than on foot. The tolled Nairobi Expressway, opened in 2022, links the airport with Westlands on an elevated road, and matatus (shared minibuses) cover the whole city for very little money.
