Money-saving tips
- Eat at warungs rather than tourist restaurants to cut food costs by half or more.
- Shared shuttles and public boats to the Gilis cost far less than private speedboats.
- Travel in May, June or September for dry weather at lower rates than July and August.
- Carry cash on the Gilis and in rural areas; ATMs can run out or be scarce.
- Compare Rinjani trek prices between licensed operators, but be wary of rock-bottom offers, which may skimp on porters, food and safety.
Free things to do

- Selong Belanak — A long arc of soft white sand west of Kuta where small, rolling waves make it one of the best beginner surf spots in Indonesia.
- Mawun Beach — Mawun is a deep, horseshoe-shaped bay enclosed by green hills, about 20 minutes west of Kuta.
