Day by day

  1. Day 1: Royal Albert Dock and The Beatles Story

Royal Albert Dock, The Beatles Story, Pier Head and the Three Graces and Royal Liver Building tower tour, then Cavern Club and Mathew Street in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Royal Albert Dock

Its Grade I-listed colonnaded warehouses around the water now hold museums, restaurants, bars and hotels.

    2. Late morning

      The Beatles Story

A walk-through exhibition in the vaults of the Albert Dock follows the band from their Liverpool childhoods and Hamburg years to Beatlemania and their solo careers, with a replica of the Cavern Club, original instruments and an audio guide narrated in part by family members.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Scouse

Traditional pubs and cafés around the city centre, especially in winter; some pubs serve it as the dish of the day.

    4. Afternoon

Pier Head and the Three Graces

Statues of the Beatles, a memorial to the engineers of the Titanic and the Mersey Ferry terminal are all on the riverside plaza.

    5. Late afternoon

      Royal Liver Building tower tour

Guided tours of the 1911 Royal Liver Building take visitors up the clock tower beneath one of the two copper Liver Birds, past clock faces larger than those of Big Ben, to a 360-degree view across the Mersey, the Wirral and the city.

    6. Evening

      Cavern Club and Mathew Street

Daytime sessions are calmer than evenings, and entry is usually free or cheap before the evening bands start.

  2. Day 2: Mersey Ferry river cruise and Liverpool Cathedral

Mersey Ferry river cruise, Liverpool Cathedral, Anfield stadium tour and Museum of Liverpool, then Baltic Triangle street art and Baltic Market in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Mersey Ferry river cruise

The ferries made famous by Gerry and the Pacemakers' song run a 50-minute river explorer cruise from the Pier Head to Seacombe and Woodside on the Wirral and back, with commentary on the docks, ships and waterfront buildings.

    2. Late morning

      Liverpool Cathedral

A lift and stairs take visitors up the tower for views over the city and the Mersey.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Blind scouse

Cafés and pubs that serve scouse often offer a blind version alongside.

    4. Afternoon

      Anfield stadium tour

Everton's new stadium on the waterfront at Bramley-Moore Dock replaced Goodison Park nearby in 2025.

    5. Late afternoon

      Museum of Liverpool

Its large windows look out onto the waterfront.

    6. Evening

Baltic Triangle street art and Baltic Market

Walk the side streets for the murals in daylight, then return to the food hall in the evening.

Before you go

  • Anfield stadium tour: Book online in advance, especially around school holidays and match weekends.
  • Royal Liver Building tower tour: Tours run in small groups at set times; book online in advance.

Merseytravel day tickets

Day tickets cover unlimited travel on buses, Merseyrail trains or both within chosen zones, which suits a day of trips to Crosby, Formby or the Wirral.

If it rains

  • Swap in Metropolitan Cathedral (Georgian Quarter): Visit on a sunny afternoon, when the stained-glass lantern throws colour across the floor.
  • Swap in Walker Art Gallery (William Brown Street): Combine it with the World Museum and Central Library next door on the same street.
  • Swap in World Museum (William Brown Street): Check the planetarium show times on arrival; shows are short and fill up during school holidays.

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 14–16 hours of visiting over 2 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 7.5 hours in December to 17 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Walking. Walking from Lime Street station to the Albert Dock takes about 15–20 minutes, and from the Albert Dock up to the Anglican Cathedral about 15 minutes, mostly uphill.
