1.Ha Long Bay

Some 1,600 limestone islands and islets rise from the emerald water of this UNESCO-listed bay, with caves such as Sửng Sốt and kayaking among the karsts. A day trip spends more time on the road than on the water, so an overnight cruise is the better option.

Day-trip tips

  • Leave early: most trips are more relaxed with a morning departure and a return before dinner.
  • City buses are very inexpensive but slow and signed mostly in Vietnamese. The airport bus 86 links Nội Bài with the Old Quarter and Hanoi railway station.
  • Hanoi railway station is the northern end of the North–South line and has trains to Ninh Bình, Huế and Lào Cai for Sa Pa.
  • For trips over about 150 km, an overnight stay or an organised tour saves a lot of travelling.
