Salzwelten Hallstatt salt mine
Take the first funicular of the day to beat tour groups and leave time for the Skywalk and the prehistoric burial ground on the way. Allow Half a day.
Late morning
Skywalk 'Welterbeblick'
Go in the morning, when the sun lights the village below and the platform is quieter. Allow 30 minutes.
Lunch
Lunch: Reinanke
Lakeside restaurants and guesthouse dining rooms in Hallstatt Markt and Lahn; ask which fish is from the lake that day.
Afternoon
Echerntal and Waldbachstrub waterfall
Go after rain, when the waterfall is at its fullest, and wear shoes with grip for the wet rocks. Allow 2–2.5 hours.
Late afternoon
Hallstätter See by boat
Even if you arrive by bus, take the ferry across to the station and back for the view of the village from the water. Allow 30 minutes–1 hour.
Evening
Sunrise on the lakeshore
Walk to the northern viewpoint at dawn, when the lake is still and the village is quiet.
Before you go
- Salzwelten Hallstatt salt mine: Tours run on timed departures and fill up in summer; reserving online ahead is wise.
If it rains
- Swap in Beinhaus (Charnel House) (Hallstatt Markt): Take a moment in the terraced churchyard outside, with its lake views and iron crosses.
- Swap in Museum Hallstatt (Hallstatt Markt): Visit before the salt mine to make sense of the archaeology you will see on the mountain.
Where to stay for this itinerary
$$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples and culture
Hallstatt Markt
The historic centre around the market square, church spires and lakeside houses
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 7–8 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 8.5 hours in December to 16 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
Getting between stops: Walking. The village is about 1.5 km end to end, from Lahn to the northern viewpoint; lanes are steep in places and there are many steps.
