Quick answer

Galway's nightlife centres on pubs with traditional and live music rather than clubs, and the Latin Quarter is busy every night in summer. Pubs generally close around 11:30pm to 12:30am, with a few late bars open longer at weekends. The main areas are Latin Quarter, West End and Eyre Square area.

Traditional music sessions

Sessions are not performances; sit nearby, keep conversation low during tunes and buy a drink rather than standing around.

What to drink

  • Guinness and local craft beer — A pint of stout is the traditional pub order, and Galway's own breweries, including the Galway Hooker brand, make pale ales and stouts found in many city pubs.
  • Irish coffee — Hot coffee with Irish whiskey and brown sugar, topped with a float of lightly whipped cream; the drink was popularised at Foynes, near Shannon, in the 1940s.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 12°C (54°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — The Latin Quarter is pedestrianised, and riverside paths link the cathedral, the Spanish Arch, the Claddagh and the Salthill promenade.
  • Bus — Take the bus to Salthill if the weather turns; the walk back along the shore is the better direction.
  • Ferry — Crossings can be rough or cancelled in bad weather; check the forecast and keep the day flexible.
  • Taxi — Taxis wait at the rank on Eyre Square and can be booked by phone or app; they are useful for late returns to Salthill.

Staying safe at night

Galway is relaxed for visitors; the main issues are late-night drunkenness around the Latin Quarter and Eyre Square at weekends and pickpocketing in crowded festival weeks. On the coast and cliffs, Atlantic waves and wind are strong, so keep well back from edges and swim only at lifeguarded beaches.
