Denarau Island
Denarau is a small island joined to the mainland by a short causeway near Nadi, built up with large international resort hotels, an 18-hole golf course and Port Denarau Marina, from where most ferries and day cruises to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands depart. It is convenient and family-friendly, but the beach has darker sand and murkier water than the outer islands.
- Good
- Short transfer from the airport; Ferries to the islands leave from the marina; Many restaurants and kids' clubs
- Watch out
- Beach and water are not the best in Fiji; Resort-heavy with little local character
- Nearby
- Port Denarau Marina, Nadi, Garden of the Sleeping Giant
$ · Best for budget and solo travellers
Nadi
Nadi is Fiji's tourism gateway, a working town with a main street of shops, the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple at its southern end and a produce market. Wailoaloa Beach, between town and the airport, has budget hotels and hostels used as a stopover before heading to the islands.
- Good
- Low-cost rooms close to the airport; Good, inexpensive Indo-Fijian food; Easy transfers to the islands
- Watch out
- Beaches are average; Busy traffic and street touts in town
- Nearby
- Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, Wailoaloa Beach, Sabeto Valley

Mamanuca Islands
The Mamanuca group is a cluster of about 20 islands west of Nadi, many fringed by reefs and holding a single resort each, from family resorts to adults-only retreats. Malolo and Mana are among the larger islands. Calm lagoons, snorkelling from the beach and easy access from the airport make them the most popular island stay in Fiji.
- Good
- Classic white-sand beaches and clear water; Quick access from Nadi; Wide range of resort styles
- Watch out
- Resort meals and drinks are expensive; Day-trippers visit some islands
- Nearby
- Monuriki, Port Denarau Marina, Malolo Island
$$ · Best for beach, budget, solo travellers and couples
Yasawa Islands
The Yasawas stretch for about 90 km north of the Mamanucas, with hilly volcanic islands, long beaches and small village communities. A daily catamaran from Port Denarau drops passengers at resorts along the chain, making island-hopping easy. Accommodation ranges from simple bure huts with meal plans to luxury lodges, and highlights include the Blue Lagoon and the Sawa-i-Lau caves.
- Good
- Quieter and more remote than the Mamanucas; Island-hopping by catamaran; Snorkelling with mantas in season
- Watch out
- Long boat rides to the northern islands; Few shops, ATMs or medical services; Meal plans at remote resorts add up
- Nearby
- Blue Lagoon, Sawa-i-Lau Caves, Nanuya Lailai
$$ · Best for families, quiet stays and beach
Coral Coast
The Coral Coast runs along the Queens Road on Viti Levu's south shore between Natadola, Sigatoka and Korolevu, about one to two hours from Nadi. Resorts sit between villages, and a fringing reef shelters shallow lagoons that are good for snorkelling at high tide but drain at low tide. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes and Natadola Beach are nearby.
- Good
- Good-value family resorts; Easy village and day-trip access by road; No boat transfer needed
- Watch out
- Swimming limited at low tide; Beaches less striking than the islands
- Nearby
- Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, Natadola Beach, Sigatoka
$$ · Best for solo travellers, couples and quiet stays
Pacific Harbour
Pacific Harbour, on Viti Levu's south coast about 45 km west of Suva, is the base for shark dives in Beqa Lagoon, rafting and longboat trips on the Navua River, and trips to Beqa Island, home of the Sawau people's firewalking tradition. It has a handful of resorts, a long dark-sand beach and a golf course.
- Good
- Best base for adventure activities; Closer to Suva than to Nadi; Quieter than the west
- Watch out
- Wetter than western Viti Levu; Beach is not ideal for swimming
- Nearby
- Beqa Lagoon, Navua River, Suva
$$ · Best for culture, budget and food lovers
Suva
Fiji's capital sits on a peninsula on the wetter south-east coast of Viti Levu. It is the political and university centre of the South Pacific, with colonial buildings such as the Grand Pacific Hotel, the Fiji Museum in Thurston Gardens, one of the largest municipal markets in the region, and the country's liveliest bar scene. It is about four to five hours by road from Nadi.
- Good
- Real Fijian city life; Good food and markets; Museum and cultural sights
- Watch out
- Frequent rain; No swimming beaches in town; Far from the main resort areas
- Nearby
- Fiji Museum, Suva Municipal Market, Colo-i-Suva Forest Park
$$$ · Best for quiet stays, couples and solo travellers
Taveuni
Taveuni, Fiji's third-largest island, is covered in rainforest and plantations, with Bouma National Heritage Park's waterfalls, the Lavena Coastal Walk and a sign marking the 180th meridian at Waiyevo. Across the Somosomo Strait, Rainbow Reef is one of the world's best-known soft-coral dive sites. Small eco-lodges and dive resorts dot the coast.
- Good
- World-class diving and snorkelling; Lush walks and waterfalls; Few tourists
- Watch out
- Requires a domestic flight or long ferry; Few sandy beaches; Wetter than Viti Levu's west
- Nearby
- Bouma National Heritage Park, Rainbow Reef, Waiyevo
