Galle Face and Kollupitiya
The strip from Galle Face Green south along Galle Road through Kollupitiya (Colombo 3) has the city's main concentration of hotels, from the Galle Face Hotel, open since 1864, to modern high-rises and the One Galle Face mall. Restaurants, late-night kottu joints and bars line the side streets, and Beira Lake and Gangaramaya are a short tuk-tuk ride away.
- Good
- Seafront sunsets and promenade; Biggest choice of hotels and restaurants; Central for tuk-tuks and apps
- Watch out
- Galle Road traffic is heavy and loud; Sea is not safe for swimming here

Cinnamon Gardens
Once cinnamon plantations, Colombo 7 is now the city's most elegant district, with the National Museum, Viharamahadevi Park, Independence Memorial Hall and wide streets of colonial villas. Boutique hotels, design shops such as Paradise Road and the Odel department store, and garden cafés make it a calm base.
- Good

- Watch out
- Expensive; Spread out; you will still need tuk-tuks
- Nearby
- National Museum, Viharamahadevi Park, Independence Memorial Hall, Odel

Slave Island
Officially renamed Kompanna Veediya, this inner-city area of old shophouses, mosques, Hindu kovils and Malay heritage is changing fast as glass towers rise around Beira Lake. It offers mid-range hotels close to Gangaramaya and Galle Face, and a grittier, more local street life.
- Good
- Central location; Local eateries and street life; Mid-range prices
- Watch out
- Construction and traffic; Few polished restaurants
- Nearby
- Beira Lake, Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green
$$ · Best for budget, food lovers and solo travellers
Bambalapitiya and Wellawatte
South of Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4) and Wellawatte (Colombo 6) are busy residential areas with a large Tamil community, South Indian vegetarian restaurants, sari shops and Hindu temples. Guesthouses and apartments are cheaper than further north, and coastal trains stop at stations along the sea.
- Good
- Good-value accommodation; Excellent vegetarian food; Coastal train access
- Watch out
- Far from the Fort's sights in traffic; Busy, noisy main road
- Nearby
- Galle Road, Majestic City, Wellawatte beach

Mount Lavinia
Mount Lavinia is Colombo's beach escape: a sandy strip lined with seafood restaurants and beach bars, anchored by the Mount Lavinia Hotel, built around a 19th-century governor's mansion. It is quieter than central Colombo and linked by the coastal railway and Galle Road, though the city is 30–60 minutes away by road.
- Good
- Beach and sunset on the doorstep; Relaxed atmosphere; Seafood restaurants on the sand
- Watch out
- Long ride to central sights; Rough sea in the monsoon
