What to drink
- Ceylon tea — Sri Lanka's black teas from the highlands around Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Uva, drunk strong with milk and sugar or plain.
- King coconut — The orange-skinned king coconut, native to Sri Lanka, is sweeter than green coconut water and is sold chilled and opened with a machete.

Getting home late
- Tuk-tuk — Choose a metered tuk-tuk or agree the fare first, and decline drivers who suggest shopping detours.
- Ride-hailing — PickMe and Uber operate in Colombo for tuk-tuks and cars, with upfront prices; they are the easiest way to avoid fare disputes.
- Bus — Red state buses and private buses run frequently along Galle Road and to most suburbs; they are very cheap but crowded and driven fast.
- Walking — The Fort, Pettah and Galle Face Green are within walking distance of each other; elsewhere, heat and traffic make walking long distances tiring.
Late-night bites
- Kottu roti — Late-night kottu shops along Galle Road in Kollupitiya and Wellawatte.
- Isso vadai — Food carts on Galle Face Green from late afternoon.
- Short eats — Bakeries and tea shops throughout the city, especially at breakfast and teatime.
Staying safe at night
Common scams include friendly strangers near Galle Face and the Fort who claim a temple festival is on and steer visitors into gem shops, and tuk-tuk drivers who overcharge. Sea currents on the west coast are strong, especially from May to September, so swim only where it is safe.
- Emergency number
- Police 119, ambulance 1990
