Quick answer

Cancún's romance comes from turquoise water, lagoon sunsets and quiet islands a short boat ride away. Adults-only resorts line parts of the Hotel Zone, but the most memorable moments are often on Isla Mujeres or at a cenote. Couples tend to stay in Southern Hotel Zone.

Romantic ideas

1.Sunset over the Nichupté Lagoon

The lagoon faces west, so lagoon-side restaurants and kayak trips catch the sunset the beaches miss.

2.Sunset at Playa Norte

On Isla Mujeres, watch the sun sink into calm, shallow water from a beach bar or the sand.

3.Sunrise at Punta Sur

The cliffs at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres are among the first places in Mexico to see the sun rise.

4.Catamaran to Isla Mujeres

A sailing day with snorkelling stops and a beach-club lunch.

5.Cenote swim

Early-morning visits to a cenote on the Ruta de los Cenotes, before the tour groups arrive, can feel completely private.

Southern Hotel Zone

From Punta Cancún the long eastern arm runs south past the large all-inclusive resorts, with wide beaches facing the open Caribbean such as Playa Marlin and Playa Delfines, the La Isla and Kukulcán Plaza malls, the Museo Maya and the El Rey ruins. The sea here is a deeper turquoise but rougher, with surf and strong currents on many days.

Good
Wide, classic Caribbean beaches; Huge choice of resorts; Quieter than Punta Cancún
Watch out
Rough water on many days; Long ride to downtown; Sargassum can affect beaches in some months
Nearby
Playa Delfines, Museo Maya de Cancún, La Isla shopping village, El Rey ruins

Romantic day trips

  • Tulum (About 2 hours by car or bus) — The walled Maya port of Tulum stands on a cliff above a turquoise cove, one of the most photographed ruins in Mexico.
  • Holbox (About 2.5 hours by car plus a 20-minute ferry) — A car-free island of sandy streets, hammocks and flamingo-dotted lagoons on the north coast of the Yucatán.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Cochinita pibil, Sopa de lima and Poc chuc. Many taquerías that specialise in cochinita pibil open early and close once they sell out, often by early afternoon.
