What to drink
- Agua de chaya — A bright-green drink blended from chaya, a leafy shrub eaten since Maya times, with lime or pineapple and sugar; refreshing in the heat.
- Xtabentún — A sweet anise-and-honey liqueur from the Yucatán, traditionally made with honey from the xtabentún flower, served neat, over ice or in coffee.

Getting home late
- Bus — Carry small peso coins and notes; drivers often can't change large bills.
- Taxi — Agree the fare before getting in, and ask your hotel what a fair price is.
- Ferry — Passenger ferries to Isla Mujeres run frequently from Puerto Juárez, north of downtown, and less often from piers in the Hotel Zone; a car ferry leaves from Punta Sam.
- Walking — Within each part of the Hotel Zone, and downtown around Avenida Tulum and Parque de las Palapas, walking works well, though the whole Hotel Zone is far too long to walk.
Late-night bites
- Panuchos and salbutes — Evening stalls in Parque de las Palapas and loncherías across downtown.
Staying safe at night
The Hotel Zone and main tourist areas are heavily patrolled, but petty theft happens on beaches and drink spiking has been reported in party areas. Agree taxi fares before getting in and use official airport transport. On east-facing beaches, respect the warning flags: currents can be strong. Hurricane season runs from June to November.
