Day by day
Day 1: Bratislava Castle and St Martin's Cathedral
Bratislava Castle, St Martin's Cathedral, Michael's Gate and Michalská street and UFO observation deck, Most SNP, then Old Town lanes in the evening.
Morning
Bratislava Castle
Walk up the stepped lanes from the cathedral and come at sunset for the light over the Danube. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Late morning
St Martin's Cathedral
Follow the small brass crowns in the pavement from the cathedral through the Old Town. Allow 45 minutes.
Lunch
Lunch: Bryndza dumplings
Traditional Slovak restaurants in the Old Town and salaš-style restaurants on the city's edge.
Afternoon
Michael's Gate and Michalská street
Look for the plaque under the gate showing distances to world capitals, a popular photo stop. Allow 1 hour.
Late afternoon
UFO observation deck, Most SNP
Time your visit for sunset, when the castle and the Old Town light up below, and book ahead if you want a restaurant table. Allow 1 hour.
Evening
Old Town lanes
Pubs and bars along Michalská, Ventúrska, Laurinská and Sedlárska streets, busy every weekend.
If it rains
- Swap in Main Square and Old Town Hall (Old Town): Spot the cannonball on the tower facade facing the square, just left of a window.
- Swap in Primate's Palace (Old Town): Visit after the Old Town Hall; the two are a minute apart and make a compact rainy-day pair.
- Swap in Slovak National Gallery (Old Town): Even if you skip the collections, look at the bold 'bridge' extension from the riverside.
Where to stay for this itinerary
$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, nightlife and culture
Old Town
Pedestrian lanes, Baroque palaces and café terraces between Michael's Gate and the Danube
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 4–5 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 8.4 hours in December to 16 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
Getting between stops: Walking. From Michael's Gate to the cathedral is about ten minutes, and the castle is a steep five-minute climb from there.
