The 16 best things to do

Historic site · Bryggen
1.Bryggen
The row of gabled wooden buildings along the east side of the Vågen harbour was the trading base of German Hanseatic merchants from the 14th to the 18th century. Rebuilt in the same style after repeated fires, the buildings lean and creak along narrow wooden passageways behind the facades, now filled with craft shops, galleries and restaurants. Bryggen has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1979.
Walk into the passages behind the facades, early in the morning or in the evening, before or after the cruise-ship crowds.

2.Fløibanen and Mount Fløyen
The Fløibanen funicular climbs from near the fish market to Fløyen, about 320 metres up, in around 5–8 minutes. At the top, the viewing terrace looks over the harbour, the islands and the sea, and trails lead through forest to the Skomakerdiket lake, troll sculptures and a playground. You can walk back down in about 45 minutes.
Ride up and walk down via the zigzag paths, or go early in the day to avoid summer queues at the lower station.

3.Fish Market
Bergen has had a fish market at the head of the harbour since the 13th century. Today there is an indoor glass hall, Mathallen, open all year, with outdoor stalls in the warmer months selling shellfish, smoked salmon, fish soup and cooked seafood to eat on the spot, including king crab and whale meat.
Check prices per 100 grams before ordering; they add up quickly, and seafood is cheaper in supermarkets.

4.KODE art museums
KODE is one of Scandinavia's largest museums of art, design and music, spread across buildings on the shore of Lille Lungegårdsvann lake. Highlights include a large collection of works by Edvard Munch, Norwegian landscape painting by J.C. Dahl and Nikolai Astrup, and design and decorative arts.
One ticket covers all the lakeside buildings for the day, so pace yourself and break for coffee.

7.Vidden hike from Ulriken to Fløyen
The classic Bergen mountain walk crosses the open plateau of Vidden between the summit of Ulriken and Fløyen, roughly 15 km of marked trail over rocky, often boggy ground with views over fjords and islands. Most people take the cable car up and walk to Fløyen, then down to the city.
Only attempt it in clear weather with proper boots and layers; fog rolls in fast and the plateau is exposed.
