Money-saving tips
- Walk up or down Fløyen instead of buying a return funicular ticket; the paths take about 45 minutes.
- The Bergen Card pays off if you visit two or three museums and use public transport in a day.
- Supermarkets sell fish cakes, sandwiches and hot food at a fraction of restaurant prices.
- Buy wine or spirits duty-free at the airport on arrival if you plan to drink; prices in town are much higher.
- Take Bybanen rather than the airport coach or a taxi from the airport.
- Bryggen, Bergenhus grounds, Nordnesparken, the hillside lanes and the mountain trails are all free.
Free things to do
- Bryggen — The row of gabled wooden buildings along the east side of the Vågen harbour was the trading base of German Hanseatic merchants from the 14th to the 18th century.
- Vidden hike from Ulriken to Fløyen — The classic Bergen mountain walk crosses the open plateau of Vidden between the summit of Ulriken and Fløyen, roughly 15 km of marked trail over rocky, often boggy ground with views over fjords and islands.
- Nordnesparken and Nordnes sea pool — The grassy park at the tip of the Nordnes peninsula looks out over the fjord entrance, with a totem pole gifted by Seattle, Bergen's sister city, and a heated outdoor seawater pool beside the shore that opens in summer.
