Day by day

  1. Day 1: Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park and Knez Mihailova Street and Republic Square

Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park, Knez Mihailova Street and Republic Square, Skadarlija and National Museum of Serbia, then Splavovi river clubs in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park

Arrive an hour before sunset and walk to the terrace by the Victor monument for the view over the confluence. Allow 2–3 hours.

    2. Late morning

Knez Mihailova Street and Republic Square

Walk it in the evening, when the street fills with families and street musicians. Allow 1 hour.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Ćevapi

Grill restaurants (roštilj) across the city; quality grill houses are always busy at lunchtime.

    4. Afternoon

      Skadarlija

Go for dinner rather than a quick drink, and expect the musicians to visit your table; a tip is customary if you request a song. Allow 2–3 hours.

    5. Late afternoon

      National Museum of Serbia

Allow time for the Lepenski Vir rooms, some of the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe. Allow 2 hours.

    6. Evening

      Splavovi river clubs

Ask locals which splav suits your music taste; for clubs, reserving a table is common at weekends.

If it rains

  • Swap in Nikola Tesla Museum (Vračar): Join one of the guided tours; the demonstrations are the highlight and the rooms are small.
  • Swap in Museum of Yugoslavia and House of Flowers (Senjak and Dedinje): Take a bus or taxi from the centre and combine it with a walk in nearby Topčider Park.
  • Swap in Princess Ljubica's Residence (Dorćol): Visit with the nearby Cathedral Church of St Michael the Archangel just across the street.

Where to stay for this itinerary

$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, culture and shopping

Stari Grad

Old Town between Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailova and Republic Square

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 9–12 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 8.8 hours in December to 15.6 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Walking. Kalemegdan to Republic Square along Knez Mihailova takes about 15 minutes, and Skadarlija is another five; expect steep streets down to the rivers.
