Quick answer
The Old Town, Dorćol and Skadarlija are walkable, but Belgrade is hilly and spread out, so buses, trams and trolleybuses or taxis are needed for Vračar, Zemun, New Belgrade and Avala. The city has no metro. No for the city, where traffic is heavy and parking scarce.

Ways to get around
Walking
Kalemegdan to Republic Square along Knez Mihailova takes about 15 minutes, and Skadarlija is another five; expect steep streets down to the rivers.
Bus
A dense network of buses, trams and trolleybuses run by GSP covers the city, including frequent buses to Zemun and New Belgrade.
Ticketing rules have changed in recent years; check the city transport website for the current system before you ride.
Taxi
Taxis are inexpensive by European standards when metered. Use licensed cabs with roof signs and a visible meter, or order through a ride-hailing app.
Avoid drivers who approach you inside the airport or the bus station.
Boat
In the warmer months, sightseeing boats leave from the Sava quay near Branko's Bridge for cruises past the fortress, the confluence and Zemun.
Cycling
Flat riverside cycle paths link the Sava Promenade, Ušće Park, Zemun and Ada Ciganlija, and bike rentals are available at Ada.
From the airport
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is about 18 km west of the centre. City bus 72 and the A1 minibus run towards the centre in about 30–45 minutes, and taxis take around 25–30 minutes; use the official taxi desk in the arrivals hall.
Do you need a car?
No for the city, where traffic is heavy and parking scarce. A car helps for the Danube fortresses at Golubac and for Viminacium, which are awkward by public transport.
