Day 1: Strasbourg Cathedral and Place Kléber
Strasbourg Cathedral, Place Kléber, Astronomical Clock and Cathedral platform, then Krutenau in the evening.
Morning
Strasbourg Cathedral
See the west façade twice: in the late-afternoon sun, when the sandstone turns rose-red, and floodlit after dark. Allow 1 hour.
Late morning
Place Kléber
Combine it with Place Gutenberg and the shopping streets of Rue des Grandes Arcades nearby. Allow 20 minutes.
Lunch
Lunch: Choucroute garnie
Traditional winstubs and brasseries across the Grande Île.
Afternoon
Astronomical Clock
Buy a ticket for the midday show and arrive early, as the viewing area fills quickly. Allow 30 minutes.
Late afternoon
Cathedral platform
Go on a clear morning for the best visibility of the Black Forest and the Vosges. Allow 45 minutes.
Evening
Krutenau
Student bars and pubs around Rue de Zurich and Place de Zurich.
If it rains
- Swap in Palais Rohan (Grande Île): Start with the princes' apartments, then choose fine arts or archaeology depending on your interest.
- Swap in Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame (Grande Île): Visit before or after the cathedral to compare the originals with the copies on the façade.
- Swap in Musée Alsacien (Grande Île): Look out for the painted wooden furniture and the traditional Alsatian costumes with their large bow headdresses.
Where to stay for this itinerary

Grande Île
The UNESCO-listed island of the cathedral, squares and winstubs
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 3–3 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 8.3 hours in December to 16.1 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
Getting between stops: Walking. The Grande Île, Petite France and Krutenau are best explored on foot; walking from the station to the cathedral takes about 15–20 minutes.
