Bačvice
Bačvice, about a 10-minute walk east of the palace beyond the ferry port and bus station, centres on the sandy, shallow Bačvice beach, where locals play the splash-and-catch ball game picigin. The waterfront above it has bars and clubs that stay busy until late in summer, and the streets behind hold apartments and guesthouses.
- Good
- Beach on the doorstep; Lively bars and clubs; Close to ferries and buses
- Watch out
- Night-time noise in summer; Busy, crowded beach
- Nearby
- Bačvice beach, Split ferry port, Split bus station, Firule
Getting to the beaches
- Bus — Promet Split city and suburban buses run to the outer districts, Solin, Klis, Trogir and Podstrana; regional coaches leave from the main bus station by the port.
- Ferry — Jadrolinija car ferries and passenger catamarans from Split's harbour serve Brač, Šolta, Hvar, Vis and other islands, with more frequent services in summer.
- Boat — Tourist boats and speedboats from the Riva offer day trips to the islands, the Blue Cave on Biševo and nearby coves.
Beach-weather months
Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in June–September. The busiest of those is July, so book early.
Beach safety
Pickpocketing is the main concern in crowded summer lanes, on the Riva and at the ferry port. The sun is strong in July and August, and sea urchins live along many rocky shores, so water shoes help. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
