Day by day
Day 1: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Saint Sofia Church
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Saint Sofia Church and Rotunda of St George, then Vitosha Boulevard in the evening.
Morning
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
Built between 1882 and 1912 in honour of Russian soldiers who died in the war that ended Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, this neo-Byzantine cathedral is topped with gold domes and filled with murals, onyx and marble.
Late morning
Saint Sofia Church
Visit the underground necropolis, which few visitors know about, before crossing to Alexander Nevsky next door.
Lunch
Lunch: Banitsa
Bakery windows and banitsa counters across the city, especially near metro stations in the morning.
Afternoon
Rotunda of St George
Sofia's oldest standing building is a 4th-century Roman brick rotunda, hidden in a courtyard surrounded by the Presidency and a hotel.
Evening
Vitosha Boulevard
Walk south towards the mountain in the late afternoon, when the light falls on Vitosha.
Day 2: Boyana Church and National Historical Museum
Boyana Church, National Historical Museum and Ancient Serdica and the Largo, then Tsar Ivan Shishman Street in the evening.
Morning
Boyana Church
Visits are kept short and in small groups to protect the frescoes, so look closely at the portraits of the donors Kaloyan and Desislava.
Late morning
National Historical Museum
Housed in a former government residence in Boyana, Bulgaria's largest history museum covers Thracian gold and silver treasures, Roman finds, medieval church art and the National Revival period.
Lunch
Lunch: Shopska salad
Every mehana (tavern) and restaurant; tomatoes are best from July to September.
Afternoon
Ancient Serdica and the Largo
Walk through the excavations, then look up at the Largo buildings for a lesson in two very different empires.
Evening
Tsar Ivan Shishman Street
Small bars, wine bars and cafés in an old-town street parallel to Vitosha Boulevard.
Day 3: Banya Bashi Mosque and the mineral springs and Sofia Synagogue
Banya Bashi Mosque and the mineral springs, Sofia Synagogue and Central Market Hall, then Vitosha Boulevard in the evening.
Morning
Banya Bashi Mosque and the mineral springs
The 16th-century Banya Bashi Mosque, attributed to the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, takes its name from the hot springs beneath it.
Late morning
Sofia Synagogue
Combine it with the Central Market Hall across the street and the Banya Bashi Mosque around the corner.
Lunch
Lunch: Tarator
Restaurants and lunch canteens from late spring to autumn.
Afternoon
Central Market Hall
The Central Market Hall on Maria Luiza Boulevard opened in 1911 in a neo-Renaissance building with a clock tower.
Evening
Vitosha Boulevard
Terraces, cocktail bars and wine bars along the main pedestrian street.

If it rains
- Swap in National Archaeological Museum (City Centre): Visit after the Rotunda of St George, which is just behind the Presidency.
- Swap in Earth and Man National Museum (Lozenets): Combine it with South Park and the NDK fountains for an easy family afternoon.
- Swap in Muzeiko (Studentski Grad): Allow a few hours with children under 12 and combine it with lunch in the nearby residential area.
Where to stay for this itinerary
With 3 nights, City Centre keeps most of this route within easy reach. For a calmer or cheaper base, Oborishte ($$$) suits couples, quiet stays and culture. Compare every area.
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 9–9 hours of visiting over 3 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.1 hours in December to 15.3 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
