Day-trip tips

  • Leave early: most trips are more relaxed with a morning departure and a return before dinner.
  • Buses get slow in heavy snow; allow extra time in winter.
  • JR Hokkaido trains run from Sapporo Station to New Chitose Airport, Otaru and the rest of Hokkaido, including limited expresses to Asahikawa and Noboribetsu.
  • For trips over about 150 km, an overnight stay or an organised tour saves a lot of travelling.
