Ras Al Khaimah travel guide

Beach resorts below the Hajar Mountains and the UAE's highest peak, Jebel Jais

Quick answer

The northernmost emirate combines a long Gulf coastline of beach resorts at Al Marjan Island, Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab with the rugged Hajar Mountains, where the road up Jebel Jais climbs to about 1,900 metres and the Jais Flight zipline and Jais Sledder toboggan run down the slopes. History is close by too: the hilltop Dhayah Fort, the hilltop ruins at Shimal and the abandoned pearling town of Al Jazirat Al Hamra. Dubai International is about 100 km away, and the emirate is a calmer, more outdoor-focused alternative to Dubai. Plan 4 days for a first visit; the best months are November–March.

When to go

From June to September temperatures pass 40°C with high humidity, so days revolve around pools and the cooler mountain. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year; resorts operate as normal, while public life slows in daytime.

Getting there and around

Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is about 20 minutes by car from the city and around 30 minutes from Al Marjan Island. Many visitors arrive through Dubai International, about 100 km away and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by car, or Sharjah, about an hour away; resorts commonly arrange transfers.

Ras Al Khaimah is spread out between the coast, the desert and the mountains, so most visitors use a hire car, taxis or hotel transfers. Public transport is limited to city buses and intercity coaches.

Plan your days

Two days covers Jebel Jais and its adventure attractions, Dhayah Fort and Al Jazirat Al Hamra. Four days adds a pearl farm visit, a desert evening at Al Wadi and real beach time; a week leaves room for Musandam or the east coast.
