Fremantle

Fremantle, about 30 minutes by train from Perth, keeps a remarkable set of 19th-century buildings around High Street and the Cappuccino Strip on South Terrace. Fremantle Prison, the Fremantle Markets, the Maritime Museum and Little Creatures Brewery are all walkable, and ferries leave for Rottnest Island from B Shed. Many visitors prefer it to the CBD as a base.

Watch out

Romantic day trips

  • Rottnest Island (About 30 minutes by ferry from Fremantle) — Wadjemup, a car-free island with about 60 beaches and bays, is best explored by bike.
  • The Pinnacles, Nambung National Park (About 2.5 hours each way by car) — Thousands of limestone pillars rise from yellow sand dunes in Nambung National Park, best seen at sunrise or sunset.
  • Margaret River (About 3 hours each way by car) — Western Australia's best-known wine region pairs cellar doors and restaurants with surf beaches, limestone caves and karri forest.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Western rock lobster, Chilli mussels and WA dhufish. BYO wine is still allowed at some casual restaurants for a corkage fee.
