Day by day

  1. Day 1: Central Park and Metropolitan Museum of Art

Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and Empire State Building, then Top of the Rock in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Central Park

Highlights include Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, Bow Bridge, the Strawberry Fields memorial to John Lennon, the Sheep Meadow lawns, the Central Park Zoo and the Conservatory Garden on the quieter north side.

    2. Late morning

      Metropolitan Museum of Art

The roof garden opens in the warmer months with views over Central Park. New York State residents pay what they wish; other visitors pay fixed admission.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: New York pizza slice

Slice shops all over the city; coal-oven pizzerias in Little Italy and Brooklyn serve whole pies.

    4. Afternoon

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Ferries from Battery Park stop at Liberty Island, where the statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, has a museum and pedestal views, and at Ellis Island, whose immigration museum tells the story of the roughly 12 million people processed there between 1892 and 1954.

    5. Late afternoon

      Empire State Building

Exhibits on the way up tell the story of its construction in just over a year.

    6. Evening

      Top of the Rock

Book a slot about 45 minutes before sunset to see the city in daylight, at dusk and after dark.

  2. Day 2: Brooklyn Bridge and 9/11 Memorial and Museum

Brooklyn Bridge, 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Times Square and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), then A Broadway show in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Brooklyn Bridge

Walking across takes about 30 minutes.

    2. Late morning

      9/11 Memorial and Museum

The museum below, built around the original foundations, holds the Survivors' Stairs and personal artefacts; the memorial plaza itself is free.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Bagel with lox

Bagel shops across Manhattan and Brooklyn, and the appetizing stores of the Lower East Side.

    4. Afternoon

      Times Square

The red steps above the TKTS booth make a free grandstand for the view.

    5. Late afternoon

      Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Its sculpture garden is a calm retreat in Midtown.

    6. Evening

      A Broadway show

Buy discounted same-day tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square or through official digital lotteries and rush tickets.

Before you go

  • Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island: Pedestal and crown access are limited and must be reserved with the official ferry operator, Statue City Cruises; crown tickets sell out months ahead.
  • Empire State Building: Timed tickets bought online cut waiting time, especially on weekends and holidays.
  • Top of the Rock: Sunset time slots sell out; book online ahead.
  • 9/11 Memorial and Museum: Timed museum tickets bought online avoid queues at busy times.
  • A Broadway show: Popular shows sell out weeks ahead; buy from the theatre's official seller to avoid resale mark-ups.

OMNY fare capping

Tapping the same contactless card or phone caps your spending after 12 paid subway or local bus rides in any seven-day period.

If it rains

  • Swap in American Museum of Natural History (Upper West Side): Arrive at opening and head straight to the fourth-floor dinosaur halls, which are busiest by late morning.
  • Swap in Grand Central Terminal (Midtown): Stand in opposite corners of the Whispering Gallery and whisper into the wall, then look for the small dark patch left unrestored on the concourse ceiling.
  • Swap in Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (Upper East Side): Look up from the centre of the rotunda before you start, then walk the full spiral to see the building and exhibitions together.

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 19–25 hours of visiting over 2 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.3 hours in December to 15.1 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Metro. The subway runs 24 hours a day.
