Maxvorstadt

North-west of the Altstadt, Maxvorstadt is home to Ludwig Maximilian University and the Kunstareal museum district, with the Alte Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne, Lenbachhaus and the neoclassical Königsplatz. Student bars and cafés line Amalienstraße and Türkenstraße, and prices are a step lower than in the centre.

Watch out

Meeting people

  • Beer garden afternoon — Find a seat under the chestnut trees at the Augustiner-Keller, Hirschgarten or Chinesischer Turm, order a Mass at the self-service counter and bring your own picnic if you like; tables with tablecloths are for table service only.
  • Weisswurst breakfast — Order white sausages, sweet mustard, a pretzel and a wheat beer late in the morning in a traditional tavern — the classic Bavarian second breakfast.
  • Glockenbachviertel and Gärtnerplatz — Cocktail bars, wine bars and the centre of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife.
  • Maxvorstadt — Student bars and pubs around Amalienstraße and Türkenstraße near the university.

Sensible precautions

Munich is generally safe and orderly. Pickpockets operate in crowds at Marienplatz, the Hauptbahnhof and Oktoberfest, and festival crowds can become very dense late in the day. In winter, watch for icy pavements.
