Day by day

  1. Day 1: Alcazaba of Málaga and Museo Picasso Málaga

Alcazaba of Málaga, Museo Picasso Málaga, Málaga Cathedral and Calle Larios and Plaza de la Constitución, then Roman Theatre in the evening.

    1. Morning

      Alcazaba of Málaga

Buy the combined ticket with Gibralfaro, and use the lift from Calle Guillén Sotelo behind the town hall to skip the steepest climb. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

    2. Late morning

      Museo Picasso Málaga

Visit early or late in the day to avoid cruise groups, and check the temporary exhibition, which is often excellent. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

    3. Lunch

      Lunch: Espetos de sardinas

Chiringuito beach restaurants at La Malagueta, Pedregalejo and El Palo.

    4. Afternoon

      Málaga Cathedral

Book the rooftop tour for late afternoon light, and look at the stump of the unfinished tower from Plaza del Obispo. Allow 1 hour.

    5. Late afternoon

Calle Larios and Plaza de la Constitución

Walk it early in the morning to see the marble gleaming before the crowds; in December, the light shows run in the evenings. Allow 30 minutes.

    6. Evening

      Roman Theatre

Come after dark, when the theatre and the Alcazaba walls above are floodlit, and have a drink on the terraces opposite.

Before you go

  • Museo Picasso Málaga: Book a timed ticket online in high season and on cruise-ship days.

If it rains

  • Swap in Carmen Thyssen Museum (Centro Histórico): Combine it with lunch on nearby Calle Compañía or Plaza de los Mártires.
  • Swap in Museo de Málaga (Centro Histórico): Start with the archaeology rooms on the top floor, then work down; the courtyard is a cool break on hot days.
  • Swap in Museo Casa Natal Picasso (La Merced and Lagunillas): Sit beside the Picasso statue in the square for the photo, then visit the house before the main museum to see where his story began.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Centro Histórico

Marble streets, tapas bars and monuments around Calle Larios and the cathedral

Pace and daylight

The sights in this plan add up to roughly 5–6 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.7 hours in December to 14.7 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.

Getting between stops: Walking. Most sights are within 15 minutes of the cathedral on foot, and the pedestrianised old town and port promenade are pleasant to walk.
