Langkawi neighbourhoods in detail
$$ · Best for first-timers, budget, nightlife and beach
Pantai Cenang
Pantai Cenang is a long stretch of pale sand on the southwest coast and the island's busiest base. The road behind it is lined with seafood grills, cafés, mini-markets and budget-to-mid-range hotels, and Underwater World and Laman Padi sit at the beach. The airport is about ten minutes away by car, and sunset bars fill the sand in the evening.
- Good
- Most restaurants and bars on the island; Walkable beach strip; Short ride from the airport
- Watch out
- Jet skis and parasailing make the sea noisy by day; Main road is busy with traffic in the evening
- Nearby
- Underwater World Langkawi, Laman Padi, Pantai Tengah, Langkawi International Airport
$$$ · Best for couples, families, beach and quiet stays
Pantai Tengah
Separated from Pantai Cenang by a small headland, Pantai Tengah has a narrower beach, mid-range and upscale resorts and a short row of well-regarded restaurants along Jalan Teluki. It is close enough to walk to Cenang's bars but noticeably calmer at night, which suits couples and families.
- Good
- Calmer than Cenang; Good restaurants within a short walk; Sunset-facing beach
- Watch out
- Smaller beach; Fewer budget rooms
- Nearby
- Pantai Cenang, Langkawi International Airport
$ · Best for budget and shopping
Kuah
Kuah is where Langkawi's ferries from Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah and Penang arrive, and where locals shop. Eagle Square (Dataran Lang) stands by the jetty, and the town has the island's largest duty-free stores, local food courts and the most affordable hotels. There is no swimming beach in town, so it suits travellers on ferry schedules or tight budgets.
- Good
- Ferry connections and duty-free shops; Local food at local prices; Cheap hotels
- Watch out
- No beach; About 30 minutes' drive from Pantai Cenang
- Nearby
- Eagle Square, Kuah Jetty, Lagenda Park
$$$ · Best for couples, families and quiet stays
Pantai Kok and Telaga Harbour
The northwest coast around Pantai Kok has a calm bay, the Telaga Harbour marina with waterfront restaurants, and the Oriental Village where the SkyCab cable car starts. Seven Wells Waterfall is a short drive away. Resorts here are spread out, so you need transport, but the setting under Gunung Mat Cincang is dramatic.
- Good
- Next to the cable car and waterfalls; Mountain and sea scenery; Quiet evenings
- Watch out
- Few places to eat after dark; Need a car or taxi for everything
- Nearby
- SkyCab, Sky Bridge, Seven Wells Waterfall, Telaga Harbour Park
$$$$ · Best for luxury, couples and quiet stays
Datai Bay
Datai Bay is a secluded beach on the northwest tip of the island, enclosed by protected rainforest where hornbills, dusky leaf monkeys and flying lemurs (colugos) can be seen. It is home to a few of Malaysia's best-known luxury resorts and a golf course, and has nothing else — which is the point.
- Good
- Rainforest wildlife on the doorstep; Calm, clear water in the dry season; Total seclusion
- Watch out
- Very expensive; About 45 minutes from Pantai Cenang; Little choice outside the resorts
- Nearby
- Datai Bay golf course, Pantai Kok
$$$$ · Best for luxury, quiet stays, couples and beach
Tanjung Rhu
Tanjung Rhu on the north coast has a long, shallow beach lined with casuarina trees and views of karst islands that you can wade towards at low tide. A large luxury resort occupies much of the shore, and the Kilim mangroves and the Black Sand Beach are nearby. It is the island's quietest beach area.
- Good
- Some of the island's finest beach scenery; Close to the mangrove tours; Peaceful
- Watch out
- Remote from restaurants; Few budget options
- Nearby
- Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Black Sand Beach, Galeria Perdana
