Money-saving tips

  • Stay in Como, Lecco or Menaggio rather than Bellagio for lower room prices, and use ferries and trains for day trips.
  • Buy a ferry day ticket if you plan three or more crossings in the central lake.
  • Visit in late April, early June or September for lower rates than July and August with most attractions open.
  • Bellagio's lakefront, Varenna's walkway, the Greenway and Sacro Monte di Ossuccio cost nothing.
  • Assemble a picnic from a village alimentari for a lido or garden lunch instead of eating on the busiest terraces.
  • Regional trains from Milan to Varenna or Como cost far less than private transfers.

Free things to do

  • Bellagio old town and Punta Spartivento — Bellagio's lanes climb in steps from the lakefront arcades, lined with silk and leather shops, to the Romanesque Basilica of San Giacomo.
  • Varenna and the Passeggiata degli Innamorati — Varenna's coloured houses rise above a small harbour, and the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a railed walkway built out over the water, links the ferry pier to the village centre.
  • Como Cathedral — Como's Duomo was built over roughly three and a half centuries from 1396, so its marble façade is Gothic while the dome added by Filippo Juvarra is Baroque.
  • Villa Olmo — A late-18th-century neoclassical villa on the shore just west of Como's centre, owned by the city.
  • Greenway del Lago di Como — A signposted walking route of about 10 km on the western shore from Colonno to Griante, passing Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra and Tremezzo on lanes, old mule tracks and lakeside paths.
  • Sacro Monte di Ossuccio — Fourteen 17th-century chapels with life-size terracotta figures line a cobbled path climbing through olive groves above Ossuccio to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso.
