Day by day
Day 1: Kotor Old Town and City walls and San Giovanni Fortress
Kotor Old Town, City walls and San Giovanni Fortress, Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and Ladder of Kotor trail, then Sunset from the walls in the evening.
Morning
Kotor Old Town
From there, marble lanes lead past Venetian palaces such as the Pima and Drago palaces to small squares named after flour, milk and bread. The triangular old town is small enough to wander in an hour but rewards a slow evening.
Late morning
City walls and San Giovanni Fortress
The path of about 1,350 uneven steps passes the Church of Our Lady of Remedy halfway up and ends with a sweeping view of the old town's rooftops and the bay.
Lunch
Lunch: Njeguši prosciutto
Restaurants across Kotor, the green market, and family smokehouses in Njeguši itself on the Lovćen road.
Afternoon
Cathedral of Saint Tryphon
Its two bell towers frame a Romanesque façade, and inside are frescoes, a carved ciborium over the altar and a treasury with relics of the city's patron saint.
Late afternoon
Ladder of Kotor trail
It gives similar views to the walls without the entry fee, and fit walkers can continue all the way to Njeguši.
Evening
Sunset from the walls
Climb towards San Giovanni Fortress in the late afternoon and watch the light fade over the bay.
Day 2: Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks and Church of St Luke and St Nicholas Church
Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks, Church of St Luke and St Nicholas Church, Maritime Museum of Montenegro and Cats of Kotor and the Cats Museum, then Dinner in Perast in the evening.
Morning
Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks
Small boats cross from Perast's quay in about five minutes; the natural islet of Saint George, with its monastery and cypresses, sits beside it.
Late morning
Church of St Luke and St Nicholas Church
Beside it stands the much larger Serbian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, completed in the early 20th century, with an iconostasis and dome.
Lunch
Lunch: Njeguši cheese
Kotor's green market and restaurants serving a meze platter; stalls in Njeguši sell it by the piece.
Afternoon
Maritime Museum of Montenegro
It explains why such small towns produced so many wealthy sea captains.
Late afternoon
Cats of Kotor and the Cats Museum
The small Cats Museum displays postcards, prints and drawings of cats from around the world, with proceeds helping to look after the town's cats.
Evening
Dinner in Perast
Eat on the waterfront facing Our Lady of the Rocks as the sun goes down behind the mountains.
Where to stay for this itinerary
$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples and culture
Old Town (Stari Grad)
Marble lanes, Venetian palaces and church squares inside the city walls
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 13–17 hours of visiting over 2 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.1 hours in December to 15.3 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
Getting between stops: Walking. Walking is the only way around the old town, and the waterfront path north through Dobrota is ideal for an evening stroll.
