Experience · Haad Rin

1.Full Moon Party at Haad Rin

Every month around the full moon, Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) becomes an all-night party, with sound systems in bars along the beach, fire shows and thousands of visitors in neon body paint. The date shifts when the full moon falls on a Buddhist holiday, when alcohol sales are restricted.

Book accommodation weeks ahead, wear shoes on the sand to avoid broken glass, keep valuables at your hotel and stay out of the sea after drinking.

Beach · Bottle Beach

2.Bottle Beach

Haad Khuad, known as Bottle Beach, is a crescent of sand on the north coast enclosed by jungle-covered hills. A long-tail boat from Chaloklum takes about 15–20 minutes and is the easiest way in; the bay has calm water outside the wetter months.

Take the long-tail from Chaloklum in the morning and agree the pick-up time; hikers can climb to the viewpoint above the beach for a photo of the whole bay.

Beach · Thong Nai Pan

3.Thong Nai Pan Noi and Yai

Two horseshoe bays on the north-east coast with soft sand, clear water and a backdrop of steep jungle. Thong Nai Pan Noi has a small village of cafés and restaurants behind the beach, and the bays are among the best on the island for swimming.

Ride or take a taxi over the hill road in daylight, as it is steep and winding, and spend a full day swimming between the two bays.

4.Than Sadet waterfall and beach

A stream tumbles down a series of rocky pools to a small beach on the remote east coast. The name means 'royal stream': King Rama V and later kings visited, and royal monograms are carved into the rocks along the river.

Combine it with Thong Nai Pan, and come after rain when the pools are fuller; in the dry months the falls slow to a trickle.

5.Phaeng Waterfall and Domsila viewpoint

Inside Than Sadet–Ko Pha-ngan National Park, a short trail leads to Phaeng Waterfall, then climbs through the forest for about 30 minutes to the Domsila viewpoint, a rocky outcrop with views over the west coast and towards Koh Samui.

Go in the morning before it gets hot, wear proper shoes for the rocky climb and carry water; the falls are fullest in the rainy season.

6.Khao Ra hike

At around 630 metres, Khao Ra is the highest point on the island, reached by a steep jungle trail through rainforest with giant trees and, with luck, wildlife such as birds and lizards. The summit looks over much of the island and the sea.

Hire a local guide from the villages at the foot of the trail, start early, and allow most of a morning; the path is steep and slippery after rain.

Island · Chaloklum

7.Koh Ma and Mae Haad

At low tide, a sandbar links the beach at Mae Haad on the north-west coast to the small island of Koh Ma. The reef around it is one of the island's best snorkelling spots, with corals and reef fish close to shore.

Check the tides and walk across the sandbar at low water; bring your own snorkel and fins, and wear reef shoes on the coral sand.

A long sandy beach on the west coast, Haad Yao has clear, deep-enough water for swimming even at low tide and faces west for sunsets. Resorts and restaurants line the sand without crowding it.

Beach · Haad Yao and Haad Salad

1.Haad Salad

A small, sheltered cove on the north-west coast with soft sand, calm water and a reef offshore for snorkelling. The name is said to come from pirates (salad in Thai) who once sheltered in the bay.
