Ways to get around
Scooter
Scooters are the most common way to get around, but the island's roads are very steep in places, especially to Haad Rin, Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach.
Only ride if you are experienced, wear a helmet and carry a motorcycle licence; accidents are common and often excluded from insurance without one.
Taxi
Songthaew pick-up trucks and private taxis wait at Thong Sala pier and around Haad Rin, charging per person or per trip on set routes.
Agree the fare before getting in, and expect higher prices late at night and on party nights.
Boat
Long-tail boats run from Chaloklum to Bottle Beach and can be chartered between beaches; boat taxis also operate from Haad Rin to the east-coast bays.
Ferry
Ferries and catamarans connect Thong Sala with Koh Samui in about 30–60 minutes, Koh Tao in about 1–1.5 hours and the mainland at Donsak or Chumphon; the Haad Rin Queen links Haad Rin with Samui's Big Buddha pier.
From the airport
The nearest airport is Samui Airport, about 30–45 minutes by road from the piers on Koh Samui, followed by a ferry to Koh Phangan; allow about 2 hours door to door. Surat Thani Airport on the mainland is linked by combined bus-and-ferry tickets via Donsak, taking around 4 hours.
Do you need a car?
No. A scooter (if you are experienced) or taxis are enough; a car is useful only for families staying in remote bays.
