Getting home late

  • Ride-hailing — Grab, Be and Xanh SM offer cars and motorbike taxis with fixed in-app fares; motorbike rides are the fastest way through traffic for short trips.
  • Metro — It is handy for reaching Thảo Điền and Landmark 81's side of the river.
  • Walking — Cross roads slowly and steadily; do not stop suddenly or run.
  • Taxi — Metered taxis from established companies such as Vinasun and Mai Linh are reliable; avoid unmarked cars and drivers who approach you.
  • Bus — City buses are inexpensive but slow and signed mainly in Vietnamese; the airport bus routes are the most useful for visitors.

Late-night bites

  • Bánh mì — Street carts and famous bakeries across Districts 1 and 3; queues at the best-known ones move quickly.
  • Fresh spring rolls — Street stalls, markets and family restaurants; vegetarian versions with tofu are common at vegetarian (chay) restaurants.
  • Fried rice-flour cake — Evening griddle stalls in Chợ Lớn and around District 1 and District 3.

Staying safe at night

Bag and phone snatching by thieves on passing motorbikes is the most common problem, especially in District 1 and around Bùi Viện. Traffic is the main physical hazard, and overcharging by unofficial taxis and some bars happens. During the rainy season, streets can flood briefly after storms and at high tide.
