Getting to the beaches

  • Car — Shared taxis (almendrones), often old American cars, run fixed routes along main avenues and pick up anyone flagging them down, for a low flat fare.
  • Ferry — Small passenger ferries cross the harbour from Old Havana to Casablanca and Regla, a short and inexpensive ride.

Beach-weather months

Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in November–May. The busiest of those is December, so book early.

Beach safety

Violent crime against visitors is uncommon, but bag-snatching and pickpocketing occur in crowded areas, and touts promote fake cigars and overpriced restaurants. Watch for broken pavements and open drains, and carry a torch, as power cuts have been frequent in recent years. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
