Money-saving tips

  • Street food and market fondas are excellent and very cheap; a full meal can cost a few dollars.
  • Use the light rail to reach Tlaquepaque rather than a taxi.
  • Take the bus to Tequila and visit a distillery independently instead of a full-day tour if you are comfortable organising it.
  • Book hotels early for the FIL book fair in late November and the Fiestas de Octubre, when prices rise.
  • Many murals, plazas and churches in the centre are free to visit.
  • Buy ceramics in Tonalá on market days for the lowest prices.

Free things to do

  • Guadalajara Cathedral — The cathedral was begun in the 16th century, and its pair of yellow-tiled spires, rebuilt in the 19th century after earthquakes, are the emblem of the city.
  • Palacio de Gobierno — The baroque state government palace on the Plaza de Armas is where Miguel Hidalgo decreed the abolition of slavery in 1810.
  • Plaza Tapatía — A long pedestrian plaza runs east from behind the Teatro Degollado to the Hospicio Cabañas, lined with fountains, shops and modern bronze sculptures, including the Inmolación de Quetzalcóatl.
  • Tlaquepaque and El Parián — The old town of San Pedro Tlaquepaque has a pedestrian main street of colonial houses converted into galleries, ceramics and glass shops and restaurants.
  • Tonalá street market — Tonalá, a pottery town about 12 km east of the centre, holds a huge street market twice a week where workshops sell ceramics, glass, papier-mâché, furniture and home goods, often at wholesale prices.
  • Avenida Chapultepec — This avenue with a wide central promenade runs through the Americana and Lafayette, lined with cafés, mezcal bars, taquerías and galleries.

Eating well for less

  • Torta ahogada — Torta stands and small shops across the city, especially in the centre and around markets; ask for 'media ahogada' for less heat.
  • Lonche — Lonchería counters across the city, particularly busy at breakfast and midday.

Getting around for less

The historic centre is walkable, but Guadalajara is a sprawling city. Light rail lines and the Mi Macro bus rapid transit cover key routes, and ride-hailing apps are widely used and affordable for everything else.
